Under the direct supervision of the esteemed Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, Professor Dr. Wissam Kazem Al-Sarraji, the department organized the scientific workshop titled "Early Detection of Breast Cancer". The workshop was presented by Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Samad, a surgeon, on Monday, November 25, 2024, in the Al-Quds Hall at the Biomedical Engineering Department building. The event was attended by the Academic Assistant, Prof. Dr. Jenan Star Khashan, the Administrative Assistant, Dr. Hussein Mutasher, along with department staff and female students.
During the workshop, the presenter highlighted the significance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the role of workshops and awareness campaigns in increasing public understanding, particularly among women. He encouraged preventive screenings, stressing the importance of early detection in improving recovery rates. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women after skin cancer. Additionally, it was noted that men can also develop breast cancer due to the presence of breast tissue, especially if there is a family history or use of bodybuilding drugs.
The session clarified that most breast tumors are benign and that the mammogram is a safe and effective tool for early detection, with radiation levels much lower than standard X-rays, posing no health risks. The lecture also discussed improved survival rates thanks to awareness and support for breast cancer research while outlining available treatment options.
Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Samad advised breastfeeding, a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding carbonated drinks as preventive measures. At the conclusion of the event, the Administrative Assistant, Dr. Hussein Mutasher, presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Samad in recognition of his efforts in delivering the lecture.
