The Second Charity Market of the Biomedical Engineering Department for the Academic Year 2024-2025
Written by عضو ارتباطUnder the patronage of the esteemed Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, Professor Dr. Wissam Kazem Hamdan Al-Sarraji, and in recognition of the importance of promoting teamwork in serving the community, the Second Charity Market of the Biomedical Engineering Department was inaugurated on Monday, December 2, 2024. The event took place in the Student Center Garden, with the presence of the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Professor Dr. Jinan Star Khashan, alongside department heads, faculty members, students of the department, and students from other university departments.
This noble initiative aims to donate all proceeds from the market to the Al-Ain Foundation for the Care of the Poor and Orphans.
In his remarks about the event, the Head of the Department stated:
“This activity has a significant impact and importance on the economic, cultural, and social levels. Through the students’ presentation of a variety of artistic creations, handcrafted items, and folkloric crafts, the event reflects the authenticity of Iraqi society. This extracurricular activity showcases the creative skills of the Biomedical Engineering students, alongside their outstanding academic achievements, which are widely recognized.”
At the conclusion of the event, the Head of the Department expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all participants and organizers of the event, praising the distinguished level of organization, which reflects a bright image of the University of Technology and the Biomedical Engineering Department.
The Biomedical Engineering Department Organizes a Scientific Workshop on Early Detection of Breast Cancer
Written by عضو ارتباطUnder the direct supervision of the esteemed Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, Professor Dr. Wissam Kazem Al-Sarraji, the department organized the scientific workshop titled "Early Detection of Breast Cancer". The workshop was presented by Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Samad, a surgeon, on Monday, November 25, 2024, in the Al-Quds Hall at the Biomedical Engineering Department building. The event was attended by the Academic Assistant, Prof. Dr. Jenan Star Khashan, the Administrative Assistant, Dr. Hussein Mutasher, along with department staff and female students.
During the workshop, the presenter highlighted the significance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the role of workshops and awareness campaigns in increasing public understanding, particularly among women. He encouraged preventive screenings, stressing the importance of early detection in improving recovery rates. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women after skin cancer. Additionally, it was noted that men can also develop breast cancer due to the presence of breast tissue, especially if there is a family history or use of bodybuilding drugs.
The session clarified that most breast tumors are benign and that the mammogram is a safe and effective tool for early detection, with radiation levels much lower than standard X-rays, posing no health risks. The lecture also discussed improved survival rates thanks to awareness and support for breast cancer research while outlining available treatment options.
Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Samad advised breastfeeding, a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding carbonated drinks as preventive measures. At the conclusion of the event, the Administrative Assistant, Dr. Hussein Mutasher, presented a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Mustafa Abdul-Samad in recognition of his efforts in delivering the lecture.
Laboratory officials meeting with the department's scientific collaborator
Written by عضو ارتباطBased on the directives of the esteemed Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Wissam Kazem Al-Saraji, a meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Scientific Associate, Prof. Dr. Janan Sattar Khashan, in the presence of the Director of the Laboratory Division, the Laboratory Quality Unit Officer and the laboratory staff at the Department of Biomedical Engineering on Wednesday, 13/11/2024 at 11:30 am in the Anatomy Laboratory.
The meeting focused on developing the laboratories and solving the issues facing officials and staff, with the aim of achieving leadership in providing technical and professional support to students and faculty members, by creating a distinguished educational and research environment equipped with the latest technologies and equipment. The meeting also included the mechanism of implementing a comprehensive plan to improve laboratories, as they play a vital role in bringing information closer and solidifying it in the minds of students, in addition to providing them with the necessary skills and expertise. These experiments contribute to providing students with the ability to use different devices and familiarize themselves with the materials used, which enhances their educational level and achieves the desired benefit for students.
A lecture entitled “The Mechanism of Implementing the Bologna Path for the Academic Year 2024/2025”
Written by عضو ارتباطBased on the directives of the Honorable Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Wissam Kazim Al-Saraji, the Department of Biomedical Engineering organized on Wednesday, 13/11/2024, an introductory lecture for the students of the first stage entitled
“The Mechanism of Applying the Bologna Path for the Academic Year 2024/2025”
with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of the education system known as “Bologna Path”.
The lecture aimed to familiarize students with the importance of this system and its basic requirements, and how to apply it by faculty members, including the preparation of a systematic description of courses in accordance with this global system adopted by most leading universities in the world.
An introductory lecture on the “Bologna Pathway” was presented by Eng.Asmaa saleem The lecture addressed the procedures for students to receive their accounts for the morning and evening classes, and emphasized the importance of accessing the system, familiarizing themselves with its features, and verifying the validity of the registered personal data. She also encouraged the need to enroll in courses to successfully complete the requirements of the Bologna course.
Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering conducts a field tour of the department's laboratories and inspects the needs of the educational laboratories

During the tour, the Head of the Department expressed his full support for the various laboratories to enable them to advance the scientific level and provide all the necessary supplies that would improve the educational process of the department and achieve the requirements of quality.
At the conclusion of the visit, the Head of the Department praised the efforts exerted by the laboratory officials, expressing his appreciation for the outstanding work carried out, wishing the department continued success.
A workshop titled "The Phenomenon of Human Trafficking and Preventive Measures to Reduce This Phenomenon"

A workshop titled “The Phenomenon of Human Trafficking and Preventive Measures to Reduce This Phenomenon” was held in the Al-Quds Hall.
The workshop was presented by Dr. Ali Fadhel Bayawi, who discussed the critical issue of human trafficking, which has become a severe threat to society. Human trafficking involves the sale and purchase of individuals for purposes related to forced labor, sexual slavery, and sexual exploitation for commercial purposes by traffickers and other profiteers. The scope of human trafficking may include the forced provision and marriage of women, organ and tissue extraction, and can occur within a single country or extend across national borders, making it a transnational crime.
Human trafficking is a targeted crime that endangers both individuals and society by violating the victim's rights to freedom of movement, subjecting them to forced relocation, and exposing them to exploitation for commercial purposes. Dr. Ali Fadhel presented various methods to address the spread of this phenomenon through religious, social, and legal roles, emphasizing the importance of upholding values, respecting traditions, and the pivotal role of governmental institutions, particularly security agencies, in combating this issue under Law No. 28 of 2012, enacted by Iraqi law. He highlighted the necessity for government institutions, especially security agencies, to take effective, deterrent actions and fulfill their complete responsibilities to prevent the spread of this dangerous phenomenon.
The workshop was attended by a distinguished group of faculty members and staff from the department and other university departments, where discussions and contributions enriched the topic of the workshop.
Workshop Title University Ecosystem and Its Role in Entrepreneurship and Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

The workshop was presented by Dr. Manal Abdul Wahed, Head of the Technological Incubators Division, and Assistant Lecturer Fadel Abbas from the Department of Computer Science. It highlighted the importance of the university environment in promoting innovation and supporting entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on how the university ecosystem can be used to achieve sustainable development goals through projects and initiatives that contribute to economic, social, and environmental growth.

Assistant Lecturer Haider Raad Hafidh from the Department of Biomedical Engineering has received a letter of appreciation from the esteemed President of the University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Al-Ghaban, in recognition of his outstanding efforts in publishing a high-quality research paper. This publication is part of his Ph.D. requirements and is titled:
"Hammerstein–Wiener Motion Artifact Correction for Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Novel Inertial Measurement Unit-Based Technique."
The paper was published in a journal indexed in Clarivate.

A workshop titled "Administrative and Financial Corruption: Challenges and Solutions"
was held in the Al-Quds Hall. The workshop was delivered by Dr. Ali Fadhel Bayawi, who discussed the pressing issue of administrative and financial corruption—a phenomenon that has become increasingly pervasive, undermining society and leading to stagnation in economic development and growth. Such corruption poses serious threats to the economy, financial stability, and administrative capability, potentially rendering the state incapable of meeting economic challenges and hindering efforts to reconstruct essential infrastructure for development.
Dr. Ali Fadhel elaborated on the primary causes of corruption, detailing its manifestations and underlying factors. He also presented several recommendations and proposals aimed at directly combating and addressing this phenomenon.
In his remarks, Prof. Dr. Wissam Kazem Al-Sarraji emphasized the critical role educational and social institutions should play in clarifying the dimensions of this issue. He stressed the importance of religious and ethical awareness, particularly in professional settings, in countering corruption. Prof. Al-Sarraji also highlighted the need for continued workshops of this kind to strengthen efforts against corruption.
A Workshop on Program Accreditation in the Biomedical Engineering Department

Launch of the Tree-Planting Initiative in the Department of Biomedical Engineering
Written by عضو ارتباطThe Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Technology, following the directives of the University President, Professor Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al-Ghaban, organized a tree-planting campaign on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
Supervised by the Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Wissam Kazem Hamdan, and in cooperation with the Department of Sports Activities and a group of faculty and students, the campaign aimed to plant trees in the department's garden.
Participants planted a variety of evergreen trees, seasonal plants, and flowers. The campaign aims to contribute to expanding the green space in the department and to promote and encourage voluntary work among students by planting trees due to its positive effects in providing a healthy environment, improving the surroundings, and reducing pollution.
The campaign is part of a series of initiatives that the university regularly undertakes to support and implement planned projects to increase green spaces, maintain the beauty of the college gardens, and ensure their sustainability.
The BME participates in a moment of silence in honor of the martyr Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah

The event included a moment of silence and the recitation of Surah Al-Fatiha for the soul of the martyr of the resistance, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who was assassinated in an Israeli airstrike targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut.
After the national mourning was declared for three days across the country in memory of the martyr of the resistance, the Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department stated: “We strongly condemn the heinous and criminal act carried out by the Zionist entity, resulting in the martyrdom of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who dedicated his blessed life to defending the rights of the oppressed and standing against aggression and injustice.”
Visit to the Central Children's Teaching Hospital in Al-Eskaan

organized a voluntary visit to the Central Children's Teaching Hospital in Al-Eskaan, under the supervision of the Director of the Registration Section in the Department, Ph.Dr. Inas Saad Muhammad, and the instructors, Ass. Lect. Azraa Talib and Engineer Amna Muhammad Suri, and Biomedical Engineer Nur Saad. The visit was attended by a number of graduated students. The visit included purchasing gifts and sweets with the help of the
students (Jaffar Muzafer, Umm Al-Baneen Ali, Raghad Mazher, and Ibrahim Nasir)
The students also played with the children and helped them change the atmosphere of illness and treatment in another activity added to the department's activities towards serving the community. The families and children expressed their happiness with the visit, which reflects the great sense of responsibility of the university students and their professors towards their community.
