Under the patronage of the esteemed President of the University of Technology, Professor Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Al-Ghabban, and under the supervision of the esteemed Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Professor Dr. Wissam Kazem Al-Sarraji,

A workshop titled “The Phenomenon of Human Trafficking and Preventive Measures to Reduce This Phenomenon” was held in the Al-Quds Hall.

The workshop was presented by Dr. Ali Fadhel Bayawi, who discussed the critical issue of human trafficking, which has become a severe threat to society. Human trafficking involves the sale and purchase of individuals for purposes related to forced labor, sexual slavery, and sexual exploitation for commercial purposes by traffickers and other profiteers. The scope of human trafficking may include the forced provision and marriage of women, organ and tissue extraction, and can occur within a single country or extend across national borders, making it a transnational crime.

Human trafficking is a targeted crime that endangers both individuals and society by violating the victim's rights to freedom of movement, subjecting them to forced relocation, and exposing them to exploitation for commercial purposes. Dr. Ali Fadhel presented various methods to address the spread of this phenomenon through religious, social, and legal roles, emphasizing the importance of upholding values, respecting traditions, and the pivotal role of governmental institutions, particularly security agencies, in combating this issue under Law No. 28 of 2012, enacted by Iraqi law. He highlighted the necessity for government institutions, especially security agencies, to take effective, deterrent actions and fulfill their complete responsibilities to prevent the spread of this dangerous phenomenon.

The workshop was attended by a distinguished group of faculty members and staff from the department and other university departments, where discussions and contributions enriched the topic of the workshop.

As part of the regular workshop series organized by the Office of the Assistant President for Academic and Graduate Affairs at the University of Technology, a workshop was held on Thursday, November 7, 2024, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering under the title "University Ecosystem and Its Role in Entrepreneurship and Achieving Sustainable Development Goals."
