Titled "Hammerstein–Wiener Motion Artifact Correction for Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Novel Inertial Measurement Unit-Based Technique" as part of the requirements for obtaining a doctoral degree.
The study addressed Participant movement is a major source of artifacts in functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) experiments. Mitigating the impact of motion artifacts (MAs) is crucial to estimate brain activity robustly. Here, we suggest and evaluate a novel application of the nonlinear Hammerstein–Wiener model to estimate and mitigate MAs in fNIRS signals from direct-movement recordings through IMU sensors mounted on the participant’s head (head-IMU) and the fNIRS probe (probe-IMU). To this end, we analyzed the hemodynamic responses of single-channel oxyhemoglobin (HbO) and deoxyhemoglobin (HbR) signals from 17 participants who performed a hand tapping task with different levels of concurrent head movement. Additionally, the tapping task was performed without head movements to estimate the ground-truth brain activation. We compared the performance of our novel approach with the probe-IMU and head-IMU to eight established methods (PCA, tPCA, spline, spline Savitzky–Golay, wavelet, CBSI, RLOESS, and WCBSI) on four quality metrics: SNR, △AUC, RMSE, and R. Our proposed nonlinear Hammerstein–Wiener method achieved the best SNR increase (p < 0.001) among all methods. Visual inspection revealed that our approach mitigated MA contaminations that other techniques could not remove effectively. MA correction quality was comparable with head- and probe-IMUs.

He praised and emphasized his keenness to support the teaching staff and members of the examination committees, commending their role in continuously monitoring the progress of the exams. He also appreciated all the efforts made by everyone to ensure the success of the examination process, while wishing the dear students success and obtaining the highest grades at the same time.
The Biomedical Engineering Department conducts a survey for student outcomes (7-1)
Under the patronage of Dr. Wissam Kazem Hamdan, Head of the Biomedical Engineering Department, the department conducted a survey for student outcomes (7-1) for fifth-year students for the academic year 2023-2024, which is considered part of the requirements for program accreditation report writing. The survey was conducted in the presence of scientific and administrative assistants, branch heads, and the Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation Department head, Dr. Ali Jalal Ali. They provided an overview to the students about the program accreditation outcomes before the survey, in addition to the attendance of several department faculty members.

He checked on the exam atmosphere and ensured the availability of all necessary supplies to facilitate the exams smoothly and overcome any obstacles to ensure the success of the exam process. Mr. Hamdan was briefed on the services provided to the students and the provision of suitable conditions for them, in addition to inquiring about the nature of the questions and their alignment with the academic level. He praised the high level of organization and arrangement he witnessed in the department, commending everyone's efforts in the success of the exam process, and wishing the dear students success and the highest grades.

The general assembly meeting of the faculty members of the Biomedical Engineering Department was held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, under the chairmanship of the honorable Head of Department, Prof. Wissam Kazem Hamdan, and attended by the administrative and scientific assistants, the respected branch heads, and the department's teaching staff. The meeting discussed the most important agenda items, including emphasizing the need for faculty members to submit their efforts within the specified deadlines. It also reiterated the importance of compliance with ministerial and university instructions regarding final exams, discussing the nature of questions, how to deal with cheating cases if they occur, and ways to improve the educational and academic reality of the department. Responsibilities of exam committees, supervisors, and exam hall monitors were also addressed to ensure suitable conditions for the exam process.
